It sounds like a joke — but it's 100% true.
In 1996, a man named Robert Lee Brock, an inmate in Virginia, filed a lawsuit against himself for $5 million. His claim? He had violated his own civil rights by getting drunk and committing crimes — which led to his imprisonment.
Since he was in jail and couldn’t earn income, he asked the state to pay on his behalf.
It was a completely outrageous case — and while the judge ultimately dismissed it, the case still technically made it into the books.
Why? Because it exposed absurdities in the legal system, and because… well, it’s hilarious and bizarre.
